Festivals and events are magical hubs of creativity and celebration, but they require massive collective energy and can generate significant waste. At Native Events, through our Smart Waste service, we believe that true sustainability is a shared responsibility, not just the organizer’s job. From the artists, vendors, and production crews to the volunteers and attendees, we all have a vital part to play in creating a cleaner, more sustainable experience.

To make it simple, we’ve broken it down into a simple game plan. Here are the 3 Wins for the Bin that will keep our events vibrant, beautiful, and green.

WIN 1: Bring Less

The best way to manage waste is to prevent it from ever entering the site.

Before you even pack your bags, van, or flight cases, think about what you actually need. Minimising at the source reduces the strain on the entire event ecosystem.

  • For Vendors & Production: Audit your supply chains. Opt for bulk packaging over individual wrapping, eliminate single-use plastics entirely, and only bring materials you know will be used.
  • For Artists & Volunteers: Stay linked in with one another on sharing travel, materials, and equipment – and don’t forget your reusable water bottles and cups.
  • For Attendees: Ditch the cheap, single-use festival gear. Pack light, invest in durable items you’ll use for years, and unwrap any new gear at home so you don’t bring unnecessary plastic packaging to the campsite.

WIN 2: Use the Bins

It sounds simple, but proper source segregation is where the magic happens.

When waste is sorted correctly, it ceases to be “rubbish” and becomes a resource. Putting the wrong item in the wrong bin can contaminate an entire batch, sending perfectly recyclable or compostable materials straight to landfill or incineration.

  • Know the Streams: Pay attention to the signage at our Smart Waste hubs. Compost, recycling, Re-Turn, as well as wet and dry materials and general waste all have their specific homes. The Smart Waste crew will be on site to help you out – say hi!
  • Vendors & Crew Leadership: Set up designated, clearly labeled separation stations in your back-of-house areas. A clean workspace sets the standard for the entire event.
  • Pause Before You Toss: Take an extra three seconds to look at the bin labels. If you aren’t sure where something goes, ask a friendly waste volunteer!
  • Re-Turn your bottles and cans: Bag and tie them separately for the group or club onsite who’ll be collecting them for a great cause.

Win 3: Take Your Stuff Home

Your experience ends when you get home, not when the music stops.

Leaving items behind—whether it’s a broken gazebo, an old tent, or production scrap—creates a massive environmental burden and a logistical nightmare for pack-down crews.

  • The Campsite Challenge: A tent is not disposable. If you brought it with you, it packs down and comes home with you. Let’s bust the myth that left-behind tents go to charity; the vast majority end up in landfill or incineration.
  • Artists & Production: Ensure your set designs, strike materials, and backstage gear are completely loaded out. Leave your dressing rooms and stages exactly as you found them.
  • Leave No Trace: Do a final sweep of your area before you depart. Leaving campsite waste? Bag it up, tie it tight, and place it at our dedicated recycling points.
